George Kennaway

As we prepare for our 75th Anniversary concert, we were delighted to receive this message from our former Principal Conductor, George Kennaway.

I'm delighted that the SCO has reached its 75th anniversary! At a time when the arts are under more pressure than ever, the thriving amateur scene in Sheffield is a sign of hope for the future. I was lucky enough to conduct this lovely orchestra for about eight years, and it was always a pleasure - especially to work with the dedicated committee and my old friend Ralph Dawson as leader. We explored some quite challenging repertoire (Schoenberg's 2nd Chamber Symphony was a highlight for me!), had great audiences, gave opportunities to promising young players, worked with first-class professional soloists, and even played Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. My best wishes to you all!
