John Rutter
John Rutter is a celebrated English composer, conductor and arranger, renowned for his accessible, richly melodic choral music and his imaginative settings of traditional and sacred texts.

John Rutter (b. 1945) is one of Britain's best-known contemporary composers and conductors, whose music has become particularly influential in the world of choral singing. Born in London, he studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was organ scholar and later director of music. His early experience as a performer, conductor and composer helped establish the combination of craftsmanship, accessibility and expressive warmth that has remained characteristic of his music.
Rutter's compositions encompass sacred and secular choral works, orchestral music, instrumental pieces and arrangements. His best-known works include Requiem, Gloria, Magnificat, Mass of the Children and The Sprig of Thyme, while his numerous arrangements of Christmas carols and other choral repertoire have become widely performed by choirs around the world. His music is notable for its memorable melodies, colourful orchestration, rich harmonic language and highly sensitive treatment of the voice.
A strong influence on Rutter's music is the English choral tradition, but his musical vocabulary is far from narrowly traditional. He draws on English folk song, Renaissance polyphony, twentieth-century classical music, jazz and popular musical styles, combining these influences with a distinctive melodic and harmonic voice. His music often communicates directly with performers and audiences while retaining considerable sophistication in its construction and orchestration.
Rutter has also made an important contribution as a conductor and editor. He founded the Cambridge Singers in 1981, establishing the ensemble as one of Britain's leading chamber choirs and directing numerous recordings of Renaissance, classical and contemporary choral repertoire. Through his conducting, recordings, arrangements and compositions, he has played a major role in bringing high-quality choral music to a broad international audience.
His music is now performed extensively throughout Britain and internationally. Rutter has received numerous honours for his contribution to music, including a CBE in 2024. His enduring popularity reflects his ability to combine the traditions of the British choral repertoire with a fresh, immediate musical language, creating works that are both rewarding for performers and accessible to audiences.
