As Sheffield Chamber Orchestra looks ahead to its performance of Haydn's The Creation on 13 June 2026, one of the most exciting collaborations is with Steel City Choristers, directed by rising conductor Eleanor Jarvis. We spoke to Eleanor about the rehearsal process, working with young singers, and the joy of bringing this extraordinary work to life.

A recent graduate of the University of Manchester, Eleanor has already built an impressive portfolio of conducting experience across both choral and instrumental ensembles. A lifelong singer herself, she brings a deep understanding of the choral tradition to her work—something that is clearly reflected in her approach with the Choristers.

For Eleanor, one of the most rewarding aspects of preparing The Creation is witnessing the growth of the young singers. “Seeing the sense of achievement the children feel as they master something they initially found challenging is incredibly fulfilling,” she explains. “There’s a real moment when everything clicks—the singing, their understanding of the music, and the sense of performance. Watching their confidence grow, both individually and as a group, is so special.”

That sense of ownership is key. Eleanor is particularly passionate about ensuring that the Choristers not only learn the music, but truly connect with it. “When they feel proud of what they’ve achieved—and have enjoyed the journey getting there—it makes all the work worthwhile.”

Her role as Director of Music is to prepare the choir thoroughly ahead of rehearsals with guest conductor John Lyon, the orchestra, and soloists. “It’s about building a strong musical foundation so that when we come together, we can focus on expression, ensemble, and shaping the overall performance,” she says.

A particularly valuable part of this process will be John Lyon’s visits to the choir’s rehearsals in advance of the concert. “That early connection is so important,” Eleanor notes. “It helps the singers become familiar with his conducting style and musical expectations, which in turn makes them feel more confident and responsive in the final rehearsals and performance.”

As for favourite moments in the work, the Choristers already have a couple of clear highlights. "The Heavens are Telling is one we’ve sung before, so it feels very natural and joyful for the choir—it’s one that stays with you long after rehearsal,” Eleanor says. “But they’ve also really loved the drama of Despairing, cursing rage. It’s intense, energetic, and has become something of an inside joke within the group!”

Together, these movements capture the remarkable range of Haydn’s writing—from radiant celebration to vivid drama—and hint at what audiences can expect in June.

With such thoughtful preparation and infectious enthusiasm, Eleanor Jarvis and Steel City Choristers are set to play a vital role in bringing The Creation to life. Their contribution promises not only musical excellence, but a genuine sense of joy and discovery at the heart of this much-loved masterpiece.
